One of my all-time favorite bands and the bassist played a Rick copy; however, I can't tell what knock-off he played. It's not an Ibanez. Anyone know?

I know that Hondo made several of those. I think back in the day, Ibanez and Hondo were making most of the Rick copies.

I'm pretty sure it was a Hondo. They are one of my favorite bands as well. I remember reading an interview in New Music Express where he talked about it. I don't have the issue, but I remember the quote. He said "yeah it's a junk copy, but I really like it."

Good. Let him have all the ****** Rick copies, then. That goes to show how he thinks of instruments.

Peter Hook is God

Easy Robert. When Joy Division started out they were a very young and hard-up-on-cash group of naive lads. Being a Manchester boy myself, I can assure you that it aint that easy to get hold of affordable Rickenbackers in the town - never mind 25 years ago when the place was pretty down on itself.

It was a Hondo copy - he says so in a more recent issue of Bass Player - calls it ***** I think

Even tho' I started playing bass in '77 when punk hit, I was never really exposed to JD/NO. It's only been the last year that I became aware of/familiar with Peter Hook.
After several years of people coming up to me after shows and saying things like "So, Peter Hook fan, huh?", I bought some NO CDs. I see what they're talking about now.

At least Hook had aspirations for a good guitar!I was in bands around that same time, I had a Hondo Les Paul as it was all I could afford at the time,and yes,t'was a little *****, but it was better than nothing.I remember dreaming of owning an ACTUAL Rickenbacker.
I finally got my first Ric a couple of years ago(aged 38, me, not the Ric),and it was everything I'd hoped for,but alas, a little too late for musical world domination.
Incidentally, I saw Joy Division as support act to the Stranglers at the Rainbow in '80,or '81,one of their last shows, and the guitar that sticks in my mind was Ian Curtis' white Vox teardrop.them was the days.

Joy Division, with Peter Hook playing any bass, is awesome! I'd love to see a wave-rock version of New Order arise, but that probably won't happen!

Copy-Rick or not he certainly knew how to get a great bass sound. Tons of bassplayers would offer a kidney or even their Ricks to sound like him.

I've tried a nice Hondo Les Paul that a fair deal better than my long-gone Gibson Les Paul Special - it even had a Bigsby.

I REALLY am impressed by them!!!!!

I was introduced to them when I happened to see a movie called "Control". This movie is a chronicle of their rise from humble beginnings to stardom. It's SCARY how closely the lead actor resembles Ian Curtis.
This movie is shown periodically on Cable, and, New Order recorded the songs played in it. I would DEFINATELY recommend this movie to ALL fans of Joy Division/New Order!!!!!

Oh and YES!!!!! Pete's basslines are fantastic!!!!!!!! That's what attracted me to them right off the bat!!!

Control is a great Movie i really enjoyed it when i was expecting not to.

I was at a Stranglers gig the other week, and whilst at the bar, overheard one very loud-speaking gent informing whoever was listening, that the only support band he had ever walked out on was Joy Division, supporting the Stranglers at the Rainbow!

I too love JD, and was quite miffed when I found out Hooky played a Hondo.....bought my first 4003, in Fireglo, after seeing his!

People knock Hooky, but I've always loved his work in JD....can't say so much for what he played after about '83 onwards!

His early basslines remain a big influence on me. I've since heard many of the live shows they played, and copy or not, he had a great tone.
