I got this message this morning from Jimmy Ohnishi, the Rickenbacker brand manager based in Tokyo:

Today big earthquake hit Tokyo.
Even though all transportation still stop, however disaster looks to be minimum, I think.
I'm okay, so you don't worry so much.

Some of the footage I've seen looks pretty awful, especially of the tsunami.

No danger here in the San Francisco Bay. Surges of 1 to 2 feet only.

3 or 4 boats were washed out of the brookings marina into the sea,but i did hear that the crescent city dock was destroyed.(it was in pretty awful shape anyway) highway 101,the main coastal byway is supposed to be closed until further notice in crescent city.
the last reports i saw of the damage in Japan said over 100 known dead....

They said it was a Hydrogen explosion and that it was the walls of the building that had exploded not the reactor. I hope they're right.

It's just heartbreaking to see the news videos of the aftermath. Really puts things in perspective, and makes you thankful for things we can sometimes take for granted. My thoughts & prayers go out for those affected by this terrible disaster.
