RIHS + 7.4 toaster, hot toaster or hi-gain?

Lots of talk about the new horseshoes and how it interacts with the different toasters. If anyone has some info on using the RIHS with the current 7.4K toaster, a hot toaster (which seem to be as rare as hens teeth), or merely the standard 11~12K neck hi-gain, it would be most appreciated.

A 7.4k toaster and a capped RI Horsie are a great match. If you don't like the capacitor I suggest the "hot" toaster but they are not so easy to find...

I wouldn't worry about finding a hot toaster. Just install that unbuttoned hi-gain bass pickup with the toaster cover

The C64S has no cap on the RIHS right? Well, that sounded fine with a 7.4k Toaster when I played one at Wildwood. Actually I would say I kind of liked it better that way than the C64 way (with the cap on the RIHS), the Toaster actually seemed to dominate the blend more resulting in a really silky sound. I know this is counter-intuitive, just reporting what my ears told me. One thing to consider is that, with the cap bypassed, the pickups can comb filter each other a bit.

Dane, I'll proceed with this plan. Perhaps in my future quest for tone, I'll swap in a 7.4K toaster. Plus, since I already have an extra neck hi-gain, my only cash outlay is for a toaster cover. BTW, I'm really loving my v57. It's tone is so unique! I plopped on a set of standard 7250M Fender bass strings, and the v57 gives me a really neat tone that is overly rich in harmonics, with less fundamentals. Very silky and silvery sounding. I'm thinking of a green python skin strap to accent that red color.
What Joshua mentioned about the lower impedance toaster taking over the mix, I've read that before on other forums. Counter-intuitive, you bet! Something about when both pups are on, the lower impedance device actually has more influence. Perhaps a member who is an electrical engineer can jump in here.

C64 and C64S should have the cap...

Yes it does have a cap, I removed them on the few I have owned. Sounds better!!

I can speak to the higher output toaster and the RIHS - my earlier ('93) V63 has them and they match quite well in both output and tone. To me (I like clarity) they are a bit muddier (like current 4003 higains) though. My opinion only. The bass with the RIHS and 7.4k toaster, the RIHS has a bit more output and somewhat dominates. Both basses involved here do not have the .0047uF cap.

Try the cap, John. You can always decapitate it if you don't like it.

I'm thinkin' I'm gonna have to get me one of them 7.4k toasters to go along with the RIHS I just put into one of mine...
Oh, and you guys need to get different avatars. This is getting too confusing!

I'm amazed we ALL don't have this as an avatar!
HINT!

I've definitely noticed this on my Jazz bass, which has one of those big old Gibson humbuckers (like on the EB0/EB3) added to it. Turning down the Jazz pickups isolates them from the Gibson pickup, which then gets noticeably louder and deeper.
I'm long on theory and short on practice here - but theory says that a low impedance pickup in parallel with a high impedance one will basically load down the output of the high impedance pickup, while the high impedance pickup will not load down the low impedance one.
But let's remember that impedance is complex (a little EE joke there). All this talk of "7.4K" or "11K" pickups is about the DC resistance (one component of impedance).. Given that RIC has always (I think; correct me if I'm wrong) used #44 wire to wind pickups, this should roughly reflect the number of turns, and thus to some extent the inductance and capacitance (other components of impedance). But only "roughly", as other factors such as the size and shape of the coil, how tightly it is wound, and the nature of the pole pieces or magnets all have an effect.
So it can be hard to predict what will actually happen when two pickups are combined. That's why I appreciate reading about everyone's experiences here.

Anyone notice that all the bugs march in unison?
