Can anyone suggest a solution to repairing cracked checkered binding? I have a black 360 with slanted frets (I believe its from 1969 or 1970) and the black and white checkered binding on the back and it has begun to crack and is on its way to falling off in spots. I'm attempting to locate a guitar restoration shop but was wondered if anyone had encountered this sort of issue before and how they remedied it.

It can be repaired, but the fact that it's cracked indicates serious deterioration (brittleness) and degradation, probably due to environmental factors. Did the wehite outer bindimng come off, too? (Technically, the white is the "binding" and the checkerboard is "purfling".)

If you want to repair it yourself, keep all the pieces and fit them back into place, using DuPont Duco cement sparingly to prevent finish damage. Avoid Super Glue--it's too hard to control. You can use masking tape to hold the pieces in place while the glue sets up (overnight).

However, don't expect the cracks not to show.

Is the binding actually cracking, or is it separating? As Paul mentioned above, this is a multipart deal, with the outer white binding an inner purfling. Can you post some in-focus shots of the areas in question?
