Could anyone recommend a quality tech to set up my 1978 4001 bass? Preferably in the greater Philadelphia area, any part of NJ could also be considered...really don't want to haul it all the way into NYC...

Chris at POTR in Lindenwold does high-quality setups on the guitars and basses he sells. I don't know whether he has the time or inclination to take on outside jobs, but even if he can't do it himself I'm sure he can refer you to someone good.

Pick Of The Ricks in Lindenwold, NJ is definitely the place to go! 8) Chris will take good care of you.

Great, thanks! I'll look them up...

Just in case they don't take outside work, any other suggestions would be good as a back up

Potential back-up tech in the Philly area: Stephen Johnson, website is: http://www.mastersbyjohnson.com/

I know Steve but have not had work done by him. He shows some rare Ricks on his site, including a 1969 381-12 in MG.

Chris at POTR does outside guitars. He has done Rick, Gretsch and Gibson for me and does a great job.

David Petillo in Ocean Twp. Dave is Phil Petillo's son and has taken over the business since Phil's death in October. David is a great luthier, a perfectionist, a true artist, and a great person. I take most of my work to him and it's always first-rate.

I also have a '78 4001--Lefty, MapleGlo. I bought it from Chris at POTR. I can't say enough good things about Chris......dealing with him is GREAT!!!!!!
AND, you should have seen how BEAUTIFULLY he set-up this bass!!!! That was a couple years ago already, and it STILL plays like a dream.

Allow me to pile on and recommend Chris at POTR. He has set up all the electric guitars I own currently--a 330/6, 660/12, and American Deluxe Telecaster--and all play great and stay in tune like champs. I don't think you'll need a back-up tech/luthier, as he's always been able to work me in to his busy schedule.
