"Jim Pons is the bass player of this band, later to join "The Turtles", and later , with Eddie & Flo to the 70' version of the Mothers of Invention."

This is what is says in the description on you tube.
We need more folks playing Hofners who are not trying to be the next macca!

Eden.

Always loved that record, and that bass has always stood out. Anyone know if the Hofner was used on the recording?

I can't find any videos of it, but Chris Wood (of MMW) plays his Hofner out live for improv sets and makes some very interesting noises with it. Made me feel kind of ashamed that I had written these off in my head for a while. His tone was clearly Hofner but unlike anything McCartney ever did with one... almost reminded me of Victor Wooten! Of course this was a live show in Denver and there was a lot of "special" smoke flying around which might have impaired my judgement. Ever since I saw that I decided I'd restore my dad's old "Ideal" Hofner copy, which I'm slowly working on. Mostly it needs the controls rewired and the neck needs shimmed very badly.

Since I've round wounds on my 500/1,I find it easy to duplicate that sound.

The Luthier who restored my RM1999 had this old Hofner (the one with two single coil pickups close together) and it had rounds on it. It really growled!

Roundwounds on a Hofner 500/1 bass really open it up for more possibilities, including growl. I rediscovered this when I bought a old one back in 1990 that happened to have Rotosounds on it. It was like, 'Wow! What's this?"

And it can still make the woody Beatlish tones as well,by turning down the treble knob on the amp, and using the neck pup.

And don't forget, for added thud and punch, mute the strings with your the side of your palm and tear at them with a pick!
