Hi, the link to this video was posted in another Byrds forum. I watched the vid this morning and was very impressed with the amount of creativity and talent that was displayed. Absolutely brilliant. Here's the link: http://youtu.be/q4KwBklNuSE

Very interesting. At first I didn't quite buy the authenticity, as I'd seen some of the exact same audience shots on another, well known Byrds video. (About halfway through, there's a great shot of a little girl who is, I'm certain singing along with Turn, Turn, Turn.) I tried to watch McGuinn's playing but the shots were too brief. So I thought to see if maybe I could read their lips as they were singing. And it may be the real deal. I'm still not certain. You decide.

P.S. OK after a little time has elapsed, and I've had a chance to watch this video again, I think it's a hoax. That isn't McGuinn's voice, and I'm pretty certain that the lead guitar on the recording isn't a mid-'60s Rick 360/12 string, but some other guitar heavily choused. Nice song, but it ain't the Byrds.

Hi,
I should have set it up better. I thought that more people knew about "Friday". What happened is this: a young lady from SoCal posted a video of a song called "Friday" on YouTube a few months ago. It was a pretty bad song, done badly. The video went viral, (over 130 million hits!!) due to the reaction that it caused. It was almost universally hated and mocked. It currently holds the YouTube record for being the most disliked video. The poor young lady ended up getting a ton of ridicule and even the occasional death threat.
The full story is here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Friday_(Re ... lack_song)
A bunch of videos appeared with people making fun of "Friday". The very creative folks who did this Byrds video did indeed use footage from TTT and MTM, but used clever edits to make it almost look like the words of "Friday" were being sung. Even Clark's tambourine appears to be synced up fairly well. The mockumentary in the beginning is also well done; tongue-in-cheek and deadpan, ala the Rutles or Spinal Tap. To me, this is a master work of parody, but I guess one needs to know the backstory for it to hit the mark. The 'Byrds' audio performance also had to be created and I thought they did a very good job, considering that they had such a pathetic song to work with. Throwing in the guy from the Old World school of folk music for his 2 seconds of camera time to only say, "It's true" was also a clever touch. There are a number of sly jokes in the setup, including a couple of jabs at Dylan. Maybe it's just my particular sense of humor and attraction to the absurd, but I applaud the talented folks who put this video together. Tom

OK, knowing the backstory explains a whole lot. In fact, it explains more than you realize. You see, I have an acquaintance named Rachel Black who is a gifted singer, graduate of the Berklee College of Music who got a lot of grief being confused with this Rebecca Black. For the longest time, I couldn't figure out what that was all about, either. Now I know. Thanks.

Jay Leno made fun of Friday a number of times on his show, despite having Rebecca Black as a guest on his show.

One featured Momar Gadaffi (however you spell it) singing it to his country (featuring an impersonator mimicking his voice, set to various footage) and also all the guests at the Royal Wedding were singing it, saying that the theme was "so modern".

Jay Leno knows how to make a silly subject into a funny thing.
