how do I remove the nut on my 360?

Hello!
I've got a 70s 360, and it appears as though the nut is too low.
I've adjusted the neck / bridge, and have gotten the action just about right, as long as the strings are fretted. Even at the first fret, every string plays great when fretted.
However, open strings are unplayable. More precisely, when played open the E A D and G strings rattle like crazy, and the B and high E strings start out as B# and E# ( the first fret is acting as a zero fret on these two strings).
My thought is to remove the nut, and then shim it. I'd like to get it off without damaging it or the finish.
Any thoughts? I've not tried to take it off yet, so as far as I know, it might only take a modest "tap" or so. I don't know.
Any thoughts are appreciated.
thanks -
Richard
