Since it's such a hot topic, please sign in...

I'm not primarily a bassist, and don't use the mute:

I do on a rare occasion. For my playing style, palm muting is not really practical; so when I want that sound, I am glad it is there.

I use it occasionally, like on the recording of "Georgia On My Mind" that I did with Brian Medway, using my 4001FL.

I tried it once, sometime around 1978, didn't like the sound and haven't used it since...

I've heard this one before... didn't it go something like "how many bass players does it take to use the mute"?

I don't play bass at all, so count me out of using the mute

That's how you got that upright sound.............now the secret has been let out.

I play guitar mostly but I hardly ever use the mute on my basses. I tried it once on another recording of mine and it sounded a lot like a Hofner to my ears. I just love the sound of Rick basses without the mute I guess.

Put me down as a no.

I enjoy the mute. If I could modify it, I'd wish it to have the push pull lever like on the Ovation Magnum. Seems that would make it more practical.

4004s don't have a mute so my answer would be "no". I never saw the point actually.

I use the mute occasionally. It makes a versatile instrument even more versatile.

If I need the sound I use it... if not I don't. Usually don't.

+1... but since I dont gig anymore its not really a problem :D

Love using the mute for Beatle tunes...
though I've noticed that using it takes you out of tune a bit

Once, for a total of 5 seconds.

Never again...
