The very exclusive 21 fret 4001 owners' club. Join it if you can.
Kendall James, I expect to see a picture of your 21 fret 4001 in here very soon.
From top to bottom: Grant Arthur's (January 1971), Gene Schillaci's (February 1971), James Grove's (originally fretless; date uncertain; according to JH, not a genuine Rick); and mine (November 1970, pickguard not original).

Sergio,
I'd love to have a photo of my bass, or even be able to see it. When I dropped it off last October I said take your time, figuring that since I was going to be in Egypt until August I'd have it around that time, it's still hanging there in sealer in his booth. I've giving him about a month and there's still nothing I'm going to do it myself. (There I've finished ranting)

Wow, that's very close to my Mando-Guitar. In reality maybe as close as 4 instruments.

What were the production numbers on these models? Can I ever hope to find one ? Or were there just a few made?

I guess Rick was producing a lot of custom instruments during this time...

I think they must have been fairly common, at least for awhile. The bass player for Flash used one on the Midnight Special Show in the early 70's and there are pictures out there of the bass, I'll look for them later this evening...

Here's one link I found to Flash's bass player using a Mapleglo 21 fret 4001:

I would post the pic directly but there may be copyright issues. Peter, can you comment on that please?

Grant's 4001 has some nice Grover tuners of the 'non-wavey' variety as well. The change to the wavey-style must have happened later that year (1971)...
