Were double bound 4005 basses made at the same time as the countured body ones? Are they rarer than the countoured body? I really need to get Richard Smiths book!

I agree with Graham. I usually do, as he is most(ly) agreeable! Double-bound versions of the 4005 were offered through the 4005 production timeline. Unlike the "round top" version the binding was simply white strip with no checker binding strip. They were sometimes coded "WB" (with binding), or "WBBS" (with binding both sides), or "OS" (old style) on order forms.

The Smith book is helpful, especially when it comes to the company history and sorting out the guitar models up to 1986, but it has not been updated since. The Tony Bacon books on Rickenbacker guitars (one on 12-strings) are excellent but no help at all when it comes to the basses. Look for a new book on Rickenbacker basses in 2012.

Thanks guys! I really look foward to a Rick Bass book. I almost bought a late 1950's Capri several year ago because I love the look but I didn't because I couldn't justify buying it for the looks. I'm a bass player!

So...WHAT is a 4005WAL then???????
I see that model listed on a Forumite's list of his currently owned basses, and wonder what that "WAL" designation means.

Walnut is actually a color name and does not refer to the body wood. It is a glossy version of the Autumnglo finish.

Is this a Walnut?

I always assumed that this '70s 4005 (owned by an ex-bandmate) was a re-fin 'cause I've never seen this color on a Ric.
