weird speakon problem

Post by chrisdski »

I have a speakon bass speaker cable. When I plug it in one way, it works. Reverse it 180 degrees, it doesn't. Have checked the wire to make sure they are +1 to +1 and -1 to -1. Have replaced one connector, first one side, then the other (with a new plug i.e. I have 3 connectors now). Have checked continuity with an ohm meter of the wire and plugs- looks ok. Tried another speakon cable with my amp/cab- works either way. What am I missing?

The only thing I can think of is that one of the connectors, either on the amp or the speaker cabinet has a pin that is too short and misses making contact with a pin on the cable connector.

Or, since you are reversing the cable 180º it is causing phase cancellation.

This is easy. The Speakon socket is 4 pole but your plug is 2 pole. These are compatible by design so you can, for instance, cross wire the 4 pole connector such that the phase is reversed when you turn the plug 180 degrees. You can add two jumpers on the socket to make it work in any position.
