want to see a really pretty fireglow Rick bass?
Sadly, this is not mine. A good friend of mine has let me borrow it for some recording and I used it on a local TV show the other night. It's a '72 or thereabouts with the toaster pickups and the checkerboard binding. Plays and sounds great. I wish he'd sell it to me, but I doubt I could afford it if he did. This is from a really funny local TV show last week- hosted by this Greek guy and the whole crew, from announcers to cameramen, are his cousins! His elderly parents sit on a couch right at the front of the studio. Audio isn't too bad for the 15 minutes of soundcheck time we got.

Nice bass, nice voice, great song.

Nice song done right! Very nice FG too.
Eerily, the acoustic guitarist looks like me when I was 22, right down to the glasses and mustache.
Welcome aboard!

I really enjoyed your song/video, Corin. Very well done! Thanks for posting.
I agree with Kevin. Early/mid '72 4001. Looking super close at the video ('cuz that's what Rick geeks do) I see what looks like a toaster pick up in the bridge position a la Jeff Scott (inside joke). It also looks like I see a couple extra holes in the pick guard above the strings for a thumbrest that has since been removed. And the switch tip is white. Why are there so many from this period with a white switch tip? Some say that switches with a white tip were never installed by RIC, but I've seen so many (usually from '71-'72) that I question that.
Cool bass. Looks a lot like this one: http://www.rickresource.com/register/vi ... lebrity%3D

Hey...Is that John Allgaier on guitar?

Only if in the future I invent a time machine, go back and get myself in 1973, and transport that me to now.rickaddict wrote:.... Hey...Is that John Allgaier on guitar?

Wow, thanks for all the nice comments on the song. I am a longtime lurker on this board, just thought you would all like to see my friend Joe's beautiful 4001.
To tell you the truth, I have always owned Ricky guitars, but I've long been much more of a Hofner bass guy until I played this bass. It's really, really growing on me and common decency demands that I return it to my friend soon. He doesn't want to sell it and I really don't have 3k for an early 70s 4001. Question for you wise men of such matters: if I get a used 4001 and eventually stick a toaster pickup in the neck, am I going to be roughly in the neighborhood of this bass? And would your recommend an 80s, 90s or current used 4001?
BTW, if you want to see a really pretty Hofner, check out the video for the song (shot at Abbey Road in London): http://www.corinashley.com

Dude, That bass is gorgeous!! If your buddy won't sell it, I'd probably find myself resorting to kidnapping it!!
I'm lucky to own a 1973 4001 and the sound that comes out of it is a thing of beauty!!

Corin, 15 more posts and you will have acess to the Rick Marketplace on this forum. You wll be able to find what you want.
As long as you space it the same. Some pickups are 1/2" and other are 1" from the neck. Anything past '85 (actual dates over lap) would be a 4003 except for the reissues, V63, C64, & C64S.crimson_dynamo wrote:... if I get a used 4001 and eventually stick a toaster pickup in the neck, am I going to be roughly in the neighborhood of this bass?
