Janglebox with a 4003?

Hello all,

I have been going back and forth about dipping my foot into the world of compression. I have heard a lot of good stuff about the Janglebox and Rics. I have a few Rics, some guitar and some bass, and if I am going to get a compressor I want one that can do all-around duty. I think the JB sounds just like the thing for guitars, but will it work just as good on a bass? I would think a compressor is compressor and you just tweak the settings as needed, but I wanted to get more informed and knowledgable opinions as I am new to all this.
So can any bass players talk to me about the JB in a bass context?

Thanks in adavance,

Jason

Jason,

I know you know your stuff, so that is good to hear. How have you used it with bass.

Just to even out the ugly stuff (volume spikes and drops). I use it more subtly with bass than with guitar, since guitar is begging for the over the top jangle, aka compression, and bass is best just as groove and pocket.

The Janglebox is supposed to emulate the sound of tube compressors. I've used the Janglebox with my Jazz bass, cleans up the muddiness a bit.

If not a janglebox, try the Aphex Punch Factory. It's fantastic!

+2 on the Punch Factory. Extremely natural sounding, does what it's supposed to do transparently. Simple, 2 knob setup with a little LED bar that I like.

I also use it as my DI.

"Natural sounding" is a perfect description. I honestly forget how much of an effect the Punch Factory has on my tone until I'm NOT using it! And then I just miss it profusely until the next gig.

OP here. So I hear what you're saying on the Punch factory for bass, but I am also looking what would be good for guitar as well. Are you saying the Punch Factory is good for both? I have heard good stuff about it for bass, but nothing about it for guitar. Given the praise heaped on the JangleBox for guitar and that some folks use it for bass as well, I am still interested in it. Any info on it with guitars would be most welcome!

Jeff Scott has/had an Aphex, so maybe he has input as to using it with a guitar.

Anything more than four strings is a waste, you know.
