I like the way the van ghents look with the blue.
Is this factory original?
Can I see pictures of the roundtop F series.

We played Mike's that day in NC. That one may be the earliest.....jwilli wrote:I've seen at least one more instrument with that non-soundhole. Mile Parks owns it. Transluscent Red 365. I think I remember another one too, in Azure-glo. Cool.
Re: Nice 1972 381 blueburst
Anybody know where this one ended up if it sold?
Re: Nice 1972 381 blueburst
I really like the fact that it's been played, not displayed. What a guitar!

What ever the case may be, I think this has one up on your avatar!libratune wrote:Looks like the same one discussed (with 2 photos) in this thread: viewtopic.php?f=1&t=400822&start=15
Are the checker-bound soundhole and headstock original?
Also, AFAIK, the Ac'cent VB was pretty much gone as a factory option by 1970 or so.
Re: Nice 1972 381 blueburst
Its back, same seller as before, same price, now advertised as having a "phantom" soundhole: http://www.ebay.com/itm/1972-Rickenback ... ?pt=Guitar
Seller's story for posterity:
"This is an extremely Rare piece of Rickenbacker history. This is a one-of-a-kind 1972 Rickenbacker 381, in all original factory blue burst finish. I do not know of another like this in existence. It probably should be in a museum, but instead, I keep it under the bed.
This guitar was used by a Rickenbacker sales rep in the 70's as a showpiece to line up dealers for their line. This guitar was Purchased from the original owner who was a rep for the company at that time.
Besides the original blue burst finish, what makes this guitar exceptionally rare is the Phantom f-hole as seen in the pictures. I have never seen a guitar this color with the Phantom F hole. If there is another in existence, I would like to see it.
Again, this guitar is all original. It comes with the original case as well. A little belt rash on the back is all. No cracks or breaks..No stories!! It plays and sounds incredible! Set up, and ready to go."

Looks more like something PW would have come up with.
Re: Nice 1972 381 blueburst
This one goes way back and is one of my all-time favorite Rickenbackers. Super cool..
Still too expensive though, what's the market for this? Even the more collectible 365OS model in Baby Blueburst (?) that is shown in Ron's avatar only brought $18.5K IIRC when Rumbleseat Music had it.

I believe the 365OS was called "Shaded Blue" and formerly belonged to Mitch Easter. You're right on the price.collin wrote:This one goes way back and is one of my all-time favorite Rickenbackers. Super cool..

On the 381 -- IMO there won't be any buyers at that price or anything close to it.
Re: Nice 1972 381 blueburst
It's probably my eyes or the monitor, but it looks like the yellowing on the "f" hole binding doesn't match the yellowing on the rest of the guitar.

It's from March 72 (LC). They should do a run of these 381 guitars with these features - accent vibratos and bound headstocks. The c72 series.
I love the more pastel version of Blueburst as well - more satin then the run in 2005.

Re: Nice 1972 381 blueburst
I'm more interested in knowing how they did the faux soundhole on this one. Was the binding inlaid into the wood? So strange, but I love it..
No reissue - I like knowing this oddball is one of a kind.

Re: Nice 1972 381 blueburst
I'm with Collin, just how was the binding set to create a faux sound hole like that? Did they make a channel in the top?
Maybe John H. would have seen this being done.
Cool 381 fo' sho.
