The topic came up with my Guild guitars as to what finish is on all of them (nitrocellulose). After buying my 2011 360/12, it's something that I really ashould know. What kind of finish is on it with a maple body?
Thank you,
Craig

Depends on when it was made. It may have the new UV cured finishes, I'm not sure what they are exactly. The previous finish used was a conversion varnish.

Tom is correct. It's probably UV-cured polyester; that's been in use for most of 2011. There was no exact "switchover" date, but a gradual transition.

Every 2011 instrument has a UV polyester finish. Switchover date from conversion varnish to UV-only was week 16 of 2010.

The same

was told by Mr. John Hall last year, concerning my former 370/12. Unfortunately it was made 11 of 2010. My actually 330/6 is from 40 of 2010 and I am glad about. The new UV polyester finish is more compatible to what's beeing used here in Europe. - For the case I never want to happen.
Was there something about a better resistance over the years with the UV polyester finish? I do not know, mean to have read something about...?!
Is this right?

It is more resistant to finish checking, scratches, and does not shrink back as readily as conversion varnish. As a matter of fact, UV coating technology was pioneered in Europe and many of the resins that are used in those coatings come from Germany.

Ah! Thank You!
I like the different connections between Rickenbacker and Germany!
Hamburg(!), Rossmeisl, Schaller and the new CNCs - why not paint!?

My old 1990s 360/6 had these little micro cracked lines from the sound hole and orthogonal from the neck. So the new UV varnish does this prevent more, right?

Do any of the amber fireglos have the UV finish or are they all conversion varnish?

I am pretty certain AFG was pre-UV cured finishes.
