Well, I could do a bit better. I had a cheapo reel to reel tape recorder and could record a section, then cut and splice the tape into a loop. Keeping it from getting tangled was a bit of a chore, but if it wasn't too long, it mostly worked...

wow-the isolated bass track for "roundabout" is another example of how bad isolated bass tracks sound in general.....but it sounds so fantastically RIGHT in the full recording. how weird is that?
that website is a great tool,i especially like the slowdown functions that keep everything in the correct key.

HA! That's amazing! These guys must have shelled out a lot of $$$ to get their hands on the original mix tapes for all this music to be able to utilize those isolated parts. Personally, I think the 'Roundabout' bassline sounds awesome isolated! Then again, I likes me some twang, so to each the eye of the beholder, or however that saying goes. I see all kinds of ways that this system could be manipulated. One could not only isolate the bassline, but splice it up to play different note patterns, and next thing you know, you've got Chris Squire's 'Roundabout' bass playing on one of your original songs! Great for those who can edit better than they can play, but probably not the greatest advancement for session musicians.

It's kind of cool checking out the older tunes - on 'Space Truckin' you can here Ian Paice's drums bleeding through the bass cab mic. Kind of reveals how the bass was recorded on some tunes.

you know,take my post with a lot of salt, my computer is hooked up to a logic tech mm28 speaker,which is pretty poor for bass reproduction. that's something i need to remedy in the coming year.....

It's all perspective, I can appreciate that. And actually, I share the same perspective on a lot of the other samples, particularly the Geddy Lee stuff from 2112. Hearing those lines solo'd, I thought they sounded much "smaller" in a way; not as iconically Rickenbacker as I was expecting. What I'd REALLY like to hear from RUSH, (besides the YYZ track they offer) is stuff from 'Hemispheres' & 'Permanent Waves'. I thought Geddy's bass tone was at a pinnacle around that time.

Christmas is just around the corner - maybe Santa will stuff some nice monitors down your stocking!

Wow that will save me of a lot of work, now we all can hear the original! I hope they will make it for every song! The versions with the vocals only are really interesting to hear too - the Roundabout sample shows a lot of Chris' harmonies - and there are LOTS of them just in Roundabout , which would be much more impossible to decode (than the bassline) from a 2-channel recording.
