Dang Tony! Hey, can you send some of that to Montana? We're having a heat wave here, well, for Montana in winter that is, mid to upper 40's (F) in the daytime, barely hitting freezing at night.

The UPS guy about got stuck the other day because the upper layer of dirt where he usually turns around melted and since it's still frozen underneath, the water can't go anywhere, leaving a foot of mushy, mucky mud. Oh, the 4 inches of rain we had last week didn't help either...

I tell ya CJ, it's wild.

It's a sight watching the citrus farm scrambling to get these torch heaters going, some farmers flash FREEZE the fruit. They say the ICE usually protects the fruit.
Two different schools of thought.

IF the fruit survives, the cold blast makes the Oranges & Grapefruits sweet as candy. There is a TWO WEEK season of Honeybells that are ready to harvest in about a week to 10 days.
You don't usually find them in stores, but if I can get some from the growers, I'll ship you a few....the juice that comes out of these oranges will bring color to your cheeks! :)

Stay dry if you can! That sounds like one heck of a mess!

Yeah, the shaded areas, or where there was some snow are sheets of ice, fun.

I'm not super big on oranges, but I might be interested in some pink grapefruits. Let me know what you find...

Flash freezing freezes quickly so the ice crystals don't have time to form and expand and tamper with the manners of the fruit. Think of it like getting lava and letting it sit on a hot June day. It will take longer to form and it will have bigger crystals like anyother boring rock. Now get lava and throw it in Ice water, it will solidify quickly, forming a smooth rock. Which is more desireable. Of course this only applies to igneous rocks. It is best to have any food (Fruit or Meat) fresh, but jif you can't have that, the flash freeze method keeps it more close to original state once thawed, and has acutally been proven to maintain more mineral and vitamin values with in the fruit as well.
This is ESPECIALLY important in fruits with high water content like watermelons, and oranges (50% water).

On a the same topic, I really envy the fact that you live in a warm state. I love warmth, its great. What is the weather like down there?

Tony, quick, go help the orange farmers water the land in the orange groves, it will help protect the oranges from freezing.

SHUT UP YOU!

Ivan, it was 88 degrees and humid just two days ago.

Last night, the cold snap came in, we had a high of 48 today, down to 29 tonight.

We lose a lot of our landscaping when this happens. We have some beautiful, rare palm trees that always suffer in this weather. I'm in Temperate Zone 9, about 20 minutes away from Temperate Zone 10 (where the coconut palm trees grow). Last freeze, I lost $3000.00 worth of landscaping.

Jeff,

FOEY ON YOU-ey?

Yeah, I'll take snow and cold over hurricanes any day! Of course, where I lived a year and half ago, we got the occasional tornado - don't like those either, glad we don't really get those here...
