Jangleboxes?

As a relative newbie to this site and recent Rick purchaser, I was totally unaware of these devices. I've only listened to a couple of YouTube demonstration recordings using one but haven't come across any sensible with\without sound files that would explain what exactly it does that differs from any other compressor - assuming that's basically what it is. I wondered, somewhat cynically, if it's a clever marketing ploy rather than a uniquely functioning tool but if it does do something quite different and specifically forRicks, I'd be interested to know more.

In my experience, the You Tube videos have such poor sound quality that they just don't capture the magic of the Janglebox compressors. You might check out the sound clips at www.janglebox.com.

If you're looking for that classic Rickenbacker sound, The JangleBox just seems to be able to do it better than anything else we've heard - and by a substantial margin.

Todd's recording really shows you what a JB can do. Also, be sure to check out Chapman Jones' "Give it Back" on the Recordings subforum. If you want to do an A/B comparison between a dry sound and the sound with the compressor kicked in, check out those clips on the Janglebox website (Each one begins without the JB, and then after about 10-20 seconds, the pedal is engaged).

Unfortunately, auditioning a Janglebox with your gear may not be possible (that is, unless you wait around to attend one of the conferences or confluences). There are a few other good high end compressors on the market, but, in my opinion, none of them even comes close to the JB.

The janglebox is essential in bringing the Ric alive imo............I also think it's important to emphazise that it sounds great with the six string and not exclusive to the 12's ( Ric 330/6 with me )........I tend to use the bright setting on mine most of the time with the attack at 2'o'clock....I mainly but not exclusively, use the bridge pickup...It sounds jangly and ringing without being ear splitting............I haven't used many other compressors but the ones I have used I've never seen the point of (apart from raising the volume if needed)

Fairly new member here, have not posted till' now ,"bin kinda gettin the feel around here"!
Glad I logged on today, as I just got my jangle box 2 via the mail yesterday.
Also ,I'd never heard about them until reading all the threads on here.
To get to it, played around with it today ( with my 360/12 only), as this is what i really want it for !!
definite jangle going on ,still need more time to see if it is worth monies spent ,taken that i have compressors already.
also any tips from anybody (on settings, etc.) as I have a bad habit of mistaking earpiercing treble for jangle !
My wife can swear to that (when her hearing returns) . I will say steve puts a great package together, as everything,
looked sharp from box to inserts, to the pedal itself! a far cry from just a ship. box and copied insruct. sheet.
some time, thought , and money was involved, and appeciated as well ( almost like the old days) !
Anyhooo, would love to hear some pointers from you guy's , want very badly to be "diggin this box" !!!

I bought a Janglebox years ago when I read about them here on this forum, and have never regretted spending the money for it. Everyone I have ever played my 360-12 for instantly "gets" what it's about when I switch from the straight glorious sound of my guitar to the Janglebox bright mode. Their reactions are always something like-"Wow, I thought you had "the" sound before, buit that thing really nails it!"

There are a zillion compressors out there. I've owned quite a few, and tried out a bunch more. The MXR ones, to me, just seemed to add a little od/distortion to the signal, when engaged, and too "sticky" when turned up. I thought the Seymour Duncan one where you could blend the dry sound back in would be perfect, but to me, the pedal sounded very anemic and undynamic in the worst of ways. Many others have either just squahed and sucked out the sound, added a bunch of unusaeable noise, or thinned out the sound more.

Many compressors sound great, but very few, IMHO, really nail that Byrds/Beatles/early Who kinda jangle chime deal. The one in the POD though actually sounds really good for this as well.

If you'd like to hear some classic Janglebox sound --- both guitarists Mark and Dave of The Byrds Collective band are usually using either an original Janglebox or a JB2 on most of their recordings posted here.

JDog, thanks for sharing. The JangleBox is the only pedal I own (have a Tim Overdrive pedal on order) and I've probably used it more with my Strat(s) & Tele than I have with my Rics.

I may be crazy, but another setup that I like is the 730S > JangleBox > Victoria Victoriette or SFDR.

Bruce, how do you like the Zoom H4N? Can you plug a 1/4" jack directly into it, or do you have to use the microphones? Can you overdub (sound-on-sound)? I know nothing about this gizmo, but it looks pretty handy if you want to record something really quickly...
