Here's something from the manufacturer

if you look at the body diameter /fretboard width in the first pic , it's way larger than all the other versions in these posts. look at the relationship of the body size to the counter width . and in the ad,tucked in the strings, looks like it is to be played as an upright ???

According to the picture on this page, I think you are correct, the original bass banjos were made to be played upright style...
