I'm looking at a late ('81) 4001 to accompany my much newer 4003.

I've always fancied a 4001 - the subtle tonal difference, etc.

However, I've read so much about the 'crossover' period between the '01 and the '03...and I suppose a 1981 is bang in there!

Going to ask a silly question, but....

Were the early 80's 4001's still very much 4001's? or was there cross-pollination in the pickups used, etc?

Pretty much the same...thicker horns as you'll see in late-70s examples, still the same hi-gains, etc. Some early-80s 4001s have wavy Grovers as opposed to Klusons.

And they lend an air of early/mid '70s, therefore.
