The Sons of Rickenbacker/Southern Gentlemen

I found this record at my local Swapmeet last weekend (yes, I'm still a vinyl record guy

).

It's a live recording that, according to the sleeve, was recorded in 1988 in Athens Georgia. It sounds pretty good!

Seems to be Roger McGuinn, Peter Buck, I'm going to guess Mike Mills (because I don't hear Michael Stipe's voice), and Bill Berry. The record cover calls the band "The Southern Gentlemen" but the label lists them as "The Sons of Rickenbacker".

Has anyone ever heard of this or know anything about it?

On 11 May 1988 Roger McGuinn played at the Uptown Lounge in Athens, GA. Supposedly some sort of solo show. Halfway through his set, Peter Buck, Mike Mills and Bill Berry got up and played with him. Not sure how well planned or rehearsed it was. The recording is found on a number of bootlegs, including the one listed above and one called "The Byrds Fly South". The guys had met Roger in 1984 when this was recorded: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hpShuPQW ... re=related He also joined them on stage for a few songs in Florida in November 1985, a recording of which was quite widely available in trading circles.

Thanks, David, for all the information! Great bootleg! I got my vinyl copy at Second Comings records in Boston sometime around 1990.
