I happened to be watching the Deep Purple "In concert" Strange kinda'.... last night and Rogers bass looked unusual

I had thought he had it re-done within the past 4-5 years or so......recalling something on the 'net about it......

What year is his guitar,it looks like 69 to 71.

You're right, looks like he did get it restored to original condition.

Also interesting is that judging by the shine on those strings, especially above his hand, they appear to be flatwound. Kind of counter to assuming his tone was partially due to that ol' roundwound grind. Plenty of players get a nice grindy sound with flats, which is sometimes difficult to convince to some players.

Is the JG a refin? IN the pics on the restoration website the pics of the cavity show it to be one solid colour...

It wouldn't have left Rickenbacker that way??

Brian, it seems that there is some conductive/shielding varnish in the control cavities. I do not think that bass was refinished.

This thread has a bunch of Roger Glover/4001 info, including a story on Page 2 about how he nearly got jailed trying to send one back to England.

Looking at the pics it appears to have a SD rear pickup. The front pickup isn't visible enough to make out but appears to big to be a Rick one.

The black paint in the cavities looks like shielding paint. Probably added by the guy doing the repairs.

Honestly I kind of dig what he did with it. Easily reversible if need be and the pickup placement seems like a nifty idea to balance out the disparity in tone between the E and G strings inherent in some basses. Like a reverse P pickup often found on PJ instruments.

his rick is not restored to original. probably a lot of routing where the double j pickups were so he has a '60's style pg. the neck pickup is not rick and looks like a larger humbucker...bartolini perhaps ??? and a duncan in the rear...or both duncans ??

I think he had to slant the J pickups to have the strings go over the polepieces. In a Ric bass near the neck, string spacing is narrower than a Fender J in the middle or bridge position.

Did anyone notice the missing knob? compare the 2 photos maybe lost during transit?
