Tom Petty Jazz Fest Show Review - 4/28/2012
Well, what a day yesterday! I saw Tom Petty for the first time yesterday, and it was GREAT!!! Although the people were wasted and toasted, I still went for the music. The band is incredibly talented, I can give them that, and they don't do any fluff and stuff, they just play music and get to the point of why you're at the concert.
Here was the set list:
Listen to Her Heart
You Wreck Me
I Won't Back Down
Here Comes My Girl
Handle with Care
Lover's Touch
I'm A Man
Something Big
Have Love, Will Travel
Free Fallin'
Spike
Travelin' Light
Time to Move On
Learning to Fly
Yer So Bad
I Shoulda Known It
Good Enough
Refugee
Runnin' Down A Dream
Encore:
Mary Jane's Last Dance
American Girl
The best song was JJ Cale's "Travelin' Light", with Tom and Mike both on 60s Strats, and both channeling Clapton, and taking the song to new heights, and using the full tonal range of their Strats. There were a few Rics there, Tom's 1964 and 2012 custom 1993 models, his new 2012 custom 1998 WB, the '86 1997 (which I can now confirm is my own '86 1997's twin sibling), Mike's '65 360/12, '89 350 MC, our own Al Sciarrillo's former 370 OS and Scott Thurston's '67 330/12. There was also Mike's R9 that he got direct from Gibson to use touring where his original '59 Les Paul was needed, a 59 rosewood neck Tele, Tom on a '64 and historic '59 ES-335 models and three of the five recently stolen/recovered guitars. I've always loved Mike Campbell's guitar work, but last night, he really impressed me. There's the aforementioned Clapton channeling, he also channeled George Harrison when he played slide and Jimmy Page on the Mojo songs, yet making it is own familiar and unique style. He got the 370 OS fuzzy and dirty for "Mary Jane", and of course, used the 350 MC for the Damn the Torpedoes songs, with that hot HB-1 cranking it out. I took a lot of pictures, but I'll upload the best ones.

Final set. Now I need to catch my breath. It's been a busy weekend!

Nice report Jake and pix too. The "I'm a Man" song, you mean the Spencer Davis song? Or the Yardbirds one? I am not sure if I have heard Petty & HB do this one.

I have NO idea what to do with those skinny stringed things... I'm just a bass player...

Keep the (positive) comments going!
Here's some video someone apparently closer than me took of the best song of the night. With not horrible sound, too!

Thanks for the review and the pics, Jake. It must have been a great concert. I enjoyed the Travelin' Light video, but I kept wishing that animal control would have used a tranquilizer dart on that throwback dancer, so he could have been safely relocated back to the wild, where he belongs.
It's a Byrd, it's a playin'..........

Great pictures, Jake !! Thanks for posting.
On MIke's JetGlo custom-shaped 350 (or whatever this mystery guitar goes by), is that sporting a Toaster in the neck and an HB1 in the bridge position ?

Cool pics, Jake. Thanks for sharing. What's with the weird mic setup on Tom's amps? Looks like a curved metal plate with an SM57 poked through.
If it is to be, it is up to me.

Jake, who's the drummer now? Look pretty ambidextrous in the clip shaking the marakas (sp??) and the tubs all at once.
