Assessing a pickup out of a bass

Hello everyone,
again I have to say what a remarkable resource this place is, with that I have a question to pose the tech savvy members.

I have a digital multimeter and I'd like to see if an old pickup is working. It's my assumption that I just set it to ohms, zero it by touching the leads together then touch each wire with the probes. My meter adjusts and displays it's range unlike the old style which you actually set the range you're trying to measure. I would expect the pickup to read in the K range correct?
But what's a good range for a mid 70's neck pickup, oh yeah non toaster of course?
Thanks in advance.
Dirk

Best sounding pickups Rick made, after the old magnetic horseshoe. My opinion. Anyway, welcome over here and that pickup should read about 8-2 to 8.4k ohms.

Thanks for the reply and info.
So can I assume that 9.39k is an acceptable reading or no?
Thanks again,
Dirk
