Wavy tuner questions

Hello everyone,
I have noticed that as I research my parts, that there appears to be different wavy tuners.

The ones I have are Grover slimlines, and they are basically bent into the wavy position. I just saw on
here some other wavy tuners that look like they are forged in one piece with the wave. I'm assuming
that style is newer, I remember seeing those years ago too.

So I guess my question is are the bent style wavy Grovers able to be dated more specifically?

Thanks again,
Dirk

For what year bass? The box backed grovers were on the early 70's basses. The straight box back Grovers were pre 73 maybe even pre 72. The stamped waxey Grovers were most definitely 73. Not sude if the moulded or cast grovers were stock on ant Rickenbacker bass. maybe there were a replacement?

CJ,

Those are the original stamped exploding box back Wavey Grovers found on 73 and maybe even 72 basses. is that a 72? No "skunk" stripe?

For the record, I love the look and feel of those original wavey Grovers!

No, it's not even a 4001. It's a 4003, made in 1984.

They looked stamped to me, but I wasn't sure...

wow! A 4003 made in 84 and with the early 70's Wavey Grovers. Very interesting and cool! I should have known it was a later bass. T
wo piece neck and without the walnut wings.

Yeah, that's the thing about RIC, never say "never" 'cause soon as you do, something will pop up to prove ya wrong...

I had a '74 4001 that originally had Grovers (no idea what type), they had been replaced by open gear Grovers before I got it in about '78. I suppose the originals had exploded at some point...

Well the bass in longer here, so I can't narrow it down that way.
They are box back, and sure look a lot like cjj and jps's.
I think those were replacements on an even older rick, so '73 could be about right.

Interesting when looking inside the case I see 1,2, and 3 stamped on the insides.
The 4th one is still together.
Are those specific to the future location on the bass?
Just curious.

Cheers,
Dirk

Wow, so many examples of post 74 basses using the box back wavey Grovers. I was sure they has switched over to the open back style (Schaller??) tuners. Makes my initial post look like I've learned nothing!!
