I am wondering how recent environmental standards may have provided the Factory with new challenges in the manufacturing of Rickenbackers.

Environmental standards are probably more a problem for our suppliers/vendors than they are for us.

The only solvent we use anymore is acetone, which is comparatively inert and exempt from AQMD control. Beyond that, we have some minor reporting requirements for the proper disposal of paint filters and excess paint or solvent by a vendor.

We only use lead-free solders, which after a learning curve, is a non-issue.

We've always had to use approved paint and dust masks, so no surprises there.

Outside vendors, on the other hand, have to deal with nickel and chrome plating hazards. Still, that's all tri-valent process now, instead of the hexavalent of the past. We've also moved to make everything polished stainless that can.

We are regularly inspected by both county health, air quality, and safety folks; it's a painless procedure and they are always polite and cooperative. Usually they compliment us for have such a clean, well maintained shop.

Thanks for this detailed reply John. I am always intrigued by life at the Factory. Running a tight ship has it's advantages. I wish I had my ducks so nicely aligned.

One good thing about buying something made in the USA - the manufacturing process is probably far less environmentally destructive than it would be elsewhere. That's worth a little bit more for me, personally.
