My New 4001

Finally picked this up the other day - had it for a night the other week, then it was straight off to a luthier the next day for a full set-up and clean-up.

Back now playing like a dream - January '77 Autumnglo. Now wearing some Ernie Ball Extra Slinky's and sounding super-sweet.

Previous owner had owned her for a couple of years, but not really played at all. It's in very nice condition indeed, very little wear and tear....just needed a good clean, some slight adjustment, and she's good to go.

My originals band is recording a new EP next week...and you can guess what going to get the star role??

Autumn Glo on a 4001, with the skunk stripe, is just eye candy all the way !
Enjoy that classic beauty ! :D

Congrats Iain! I saw this one on eBay once, in late 2010 I think. It's a fabulous colour, great bass well done!

How does your 4001 sound with the Toaster instead of the original stock pickup it would have been fitted with, is it easy to explain the differences?

And yet my 1980 AutumnGlo (only 3 years apart) is vastly different. I love this color and it's interesting how much it changed. Some are almost a 3 Tone Surnburst with a very dark edge.

On my 73, it came with a toaster as well as the earlier slotted pole piece treble pup. It seems 73 was very much as transitional year. My May 73 has several of the desirable traits like the toaster and treble pup but no full width inlays or Aluminum tail piece.

Must have been - the guy who I bought it from said he'd got it from E-bay, I think in November '10....didn't tell what he paid, though....! :D

He didn't know anything of the history, so unlike my other 4001, I have no knowledge of where it's been for 33 of it's 35 years!

The guy didn't actually have it up for sale, believe it or not - it was just sitting in his house unloved and barely played, as he had trouble connecting with it. Makes you wonder how many others are out there.....

I've really fallen for the 4001's in a big way. I resisted them for a long time - and when I finally got one, I realised that it was indeed (for me) the 'classic' tone that I've been searching for all along. Both have the 0.047 capacitor in place, so sound as original as I can hope for.

Thanks for the kind comments, guys. I couldn't keep such a lovely bass to myself - it's been hidden for too long already! :D

see how in late '76 early '77 the knob arrangement was squished together ? next was the geddy knob arrangement with the bass volume moved up some and the others returned to the '73 style spacing.

Excellent, thanks Ronald!

I'd have never noticed that at all...now I can't stop starting at the difference!

Any idea why they changed them to be closer in the first place?
