I'm mostly interested in the v and c series. c64 has the cap right? v63 no cap? what about the chris squire cap or no?

didn't ALL the real deals have the cap in the 60's?

Do a lot of folks put the cap in to get closer to the classic sound?

Thanks for your info

Brett

Cs have caps, Vs do not, but mine has one in it to make the magnetic horseshoes pickup in mime sound like it is supposed to. 8)

Jeff, how does a pickup sound when it's in mime? I've been wrestling with this question for hours! :?

And Brett, I'll go out on a limb and say that I don't believe the CS model have the cap, but I'm only 95% sure.

Evan, you can only get it into "mime" mode when you have the special JPS control knob alignment engaged.

CS's do not have the cap.

Neither my current '00 CS and the previous '91 had the cap. But I am curious! Has anyone here put the cap on a V63? Looks like you did Jeff. Hows it compare sound-wise?

I did Fran, to my V63 Kevin has again, and there was a difference. The usual thining you'd expect. I left it in, but didn't play it much, so don't go by me.

I have seen at least an example of a v63 with the cap. That was a stunning v63 with flame maple for sale on Olivia's vintage. Thanks to the excellent pictures it did seem to me like it was factory installed.

I am about to put it in mine. I bought it to get the 4001 tone so in it will go.

Not as beefy, as you would expect, to the uncapped sound, but it gives a more focused tone to the mids and high end, as the HS PU doesn't "compete" with the toaster, they have their own frequency ranges to work in. You also do not get the mid suckout from the phase interaction of the two pickups used together. When going from the toaster to both pickups it just add more to the higher range with no mud. Soloed, the HS PU cuts like a knife  8), but if the bass is cranked on the amp it can still get a great full range tone all by itself.
