Another 4001 appearance I wasn't aware of...

I spotted the 4001 on the first video below on a BBC programme about disco music on tv this week. I'm always interested to see Rickenbackers used in different styles of music, and especially funk.

Nice. The bass looks like about a .... '72?

The music is recorded - the vocal is not - a great performance there by Patti LaBelle.

Almost certainly a late '72. No tug bar, full-width inlays that might be the older sparkly type, but the giveaway is how the teardrop of the pickguard goes over the binding near the inputs (see 1:00 of the second viddy). Smaller body size + no tug bar = late '72.

I remember trying to figure out who the bass player was the first time the 2nd video was posted (nice to see it again!) but I struck out.
