I still find the painted f-hole look takes away a bit from the beauty of this instrument.

I'm not crazy about the painted f-holes either. I hear Chet Atkins bugged them to do make a hollowbody that would feed back less and this is what they came up with. Is that true?

Sure is, Jason! Gretsch referred to the enclosed bodied Gretsches as "Electrotone Hollowbodies". This was indeed an attempt to control hollowbody feedback. Chet had a beautiful one-off black 6120 back in the late '50s with gold sparkle nitron F-hole inserts, so he was probably the one who first came up with the idea. I believe Guild also had a fully enclosed "George Barnes" model, but without the silkscreened F-holes.
