The Edge gets a custom Ric, too!

First Tom Petty gets a new 2012 1993 12-string. Now The Edge gets a Pearl White Rose Morris 12-string with a 660/12 width dot neck, similar to those from that special run made for Norman's Rare Guitars in 1993.

Lucky Edge is all I can say, Man this is nice...!

It''s not every Edge that gets the binding . . .

This looks like the same body/headstock/finish as those in the recent UK Pearl White run.

Now if they would only put the 1.75 width nut on the rest of their 12-strings, except, of course, for the vintage reissues....

Not sure I'd call this one a 1993....and definitely not a Rose Morris. Besides the obvious, there's no binding.

okay John, now you hooked me

The upper guard actually looks slightly different to the UK Pearl Whites. In these two pics it seems the lip on the upper guard hasn't been centred between the 2 pick-ups (i.e. no gap next to the bridge pick up and a gap to the neck pick-up). If that's so, it's going to look even more out of whack than the ones fitted to the UK six string guitars where the stock 660 guard was modified to create a centred position with gaps to both pick-ups.

My Ruby C63 has the same guards, though in silver instead of gold; I don't care about the upper guard spacing... I don't even notice the upper guard spacing. It's an awesome guitar, and so is the Edge's; I don't think the Edge cares about the spacing either, if he even notices it; I think he's just happy to be playing a cool, custom Rick.

At gigs, no one ever mentions the spacing on the upper guard; they just tell me they love the guitar.

Everyone should be familiar with the RIC rule for specials by now; no specially fabricated parts for the specials, just whatever's available in-house.

Jeez, guys, get out and gig, and stop nit-picking things to death; you'll be much happier.

Hi Paul. It's great that as you neither care about, nor even noticed, the unusual shape of the pickguard on your Ruby C63 guitar you still took the time to comment.

You're almost certainly correct that the Edge won't notice (or care) either. He has hundreds of guitars, and I'd be surprised if he pays much attention to minor cosmetic aspects of any of them.

I also agree most people at any gig are going to have little or no interest in the details of the guitars used. They are there for the music not to look at a guitar exhibition. I suspect the vast majority of U2 fans would be unable to make even basic differentiation between the many brands/models of guitar that the Edge goes through in a gig let alone any of the smaller details.

However, I think this type of detailed discussion is of interest to those of us who do take note of the details of new Ricks, especially in the context of the brand's history. With that in mind, I'm including some pics below which illustrate the differences in pick-guard shapes that we've been discussing above.

On your point about "the rule" regarding using only standard off-the-shelf parts for special editions, if you look at the pictures you'll see that the 660 upper guards used on the white guitars have had to be modified to fit...they are not stock off-the-shelf.

I am very happy gigging AND nitpicking, thankyouverymuch. :)
