OK experts....is this a faker? (4001 FL)

Not knowing much about the fretless models, I did some searching in the registry....didn't see any with headstock binding....and the volume/tone pots look too close.
First glance I thought the fretboard was too dark, but a couple in the registry were similar.
What ya'll think?

I'd say real. I've seen a couple of basses with a refinished headstock with white edging that looks like binding. The pickguard is not standard, and he mentions that an extra pickguard is included (although not shown). Don't know of any fakers that are fretless, but that doesn't mean that it could have been done.

Good catch, I forgot what he said about pick guards. I did e-mail and ask about the serial number, so we shall see.
Let the bidding frenzy commence.....

I agree with Paul, it's real but modded. I have a 1975 4001 FL that had its TRC repainted with an accent strip around the edge:
so it would not surprise me that the one being sold has been modified.

So who just packs up a Ric and takes it to the Goodwill store?

I think the bound headstock look is really classy. It looks great on the JG! Yeah,i would say the bass looks pretty authentic.

Well, while you and I wouldn't do that, there are a lot of folks out there faced with clearing out homes of family members who've passed away. This is a difficult task for anyone, and many choose to donate estate contents to charity; just have them come, haul it away, and job done. I suspect that is likely the case here.

Very true, that can be a VERY difficult job for a family. Or....maybe somebody really wanted to give them a gift!
I got a reply back about the serial number, which is: QB6XX. Both output jacks are still installed.
Ric decoder says Feb. 1977.

At the least, Goodwill will get a good chunk of change with which to continue their good works.
BTW, they might want to reconsider what they consider to be a 'musical instrument ' ...

They probably thought it sounded so similar to an Ashbory bass so.......

I thought it might have been posted that way because they had heard that some instruments are a real pain in the a$$ to play ...

I hear ya Brian! Keeping tabs on our two pawn shops here has only found me a Rick 4001 copy bass, which I informed him it was illegal to sell. I don't think that made me very popular.

I just know it....I can feel the RM1999 in the local Goodwill calling to me now. That just has to be where they all are. And I always thought they were under beds or in sheds in the UK.
