Just watched THAT THING YOU DO again and took notice of Jimmy's 12 string Ric. It was without a doubt a brand new guitar. No way did the filmmakers find a '60s Ric in such perfect condition. So I one-der...where'd the fimmakers get the guitar? I know Ric make a period correct 360/12C63, but wasn't that put in production after the film THAT THING YOU DO was made? The film is mid-90s.
Is it possible Ric got involved with the production and produced a new Ric 12 for the film?

IIRC RIC supplied them with a new 360/12v64.

Yes. I also have an autographed script around here somewhere . . .

Ah, interesting.
Being that it is a Tom Hanks film and he is a super-fan of iconic '60s things (space program, James Bond films...), it wouldn't surprise me that he personally wanted the iconic 12 string Ric for his film. He sure gives that guitar a wonderful entrance into the film - a glorious full screen close-up.

I've always loved this film. It was two years after Hanks hit big with Gump. I also love the backline of showroom quality blonde piggyback Fender amps.

Is it true that Hanks kept the guitar after the shoot?
He has an extensive Beatles collection, and is one of the guests in Eric Idle's RUTLES 2 Can't buy Me Lunch project...
I love the 12 string sound on this song which plays over the credits...

I love that movie, too. It is just so typical of every band I have ever been in. I recognized each and every character. What a hoot!

Have to seen the alternate version? It is implied Tom Hanks better half in the movie is Howie Long. Tom Hanks real wife, Rita Wilson may be a lady of questionable reputation. TB Player gets lucky and Shade's ended up working at Clint Howard's jazz radio station. Other than that, it's the same movie.

Tom Hanks has that guitar; it's a 360/12 V64.
If you look carefully in the scene where they're backstage at the Hollywood showcase and the ding dong lead vocalist is changing the strings on the 12, you can tell the case is a brand-new RI vintage style case.

I always loved that movie. It came out right as I was leaving my band to join the Army and the bass player in the movie leaves the band to join the Marines....too funny.
