Cool that he's using the mutes on his Jazz Bass.
I know a drummer who uses a kick drum that big.
Note the Rick Transonic cabinet that Jimmy uses to the left of his amp stack.

Sure sounds muted here too, what a guy.

Here's another, in the picture you can clearly see a block of ? ( foam ) next to the bridge pup. ''Posts and runs over to my 4001'' to apologize for never using the mute

Re: John Paul Jones
Don't feel bad. I've had a hard time wanting to use the tailpiece mutes too at times, because they are not very user-friendly--a lot of work involved engaging or disengaging them. On my 4001FL with a Hipshot bridge I just stuff pieces of cheap sponge under each string. It's easy, affects intonation less and IMO sounds better.Seans wrote:''Posts and runs over to my 4001'' to apologize for never using the mute
Not to throw the stock mutes under the bus--they are great if you take the time to dial them in but then you are married to them; it's not meant to change "on the fly".
Re: John Paul Jones
Certainly an easier mid gig change, just whip the sponge out. I think JPJ would do the very same when it came round to playing Heartbreaker.

Zep II is one of my favorite "Bass" albums of all time. Love that stuff!
