Don't feel bad. I've had a hard time wanting to use the tailpiece mutes too at times, because they are not very user-friendly--a lot of work involved engaging or disengaging them. On my 4001FL with a Hipshot bridge I just stuff pieces of cheap sponge under each string. It's easy, affects intonation less and IMO sounds better.
Not to throw the stock mutes under the bus--they are great if you take the time to dial them in but then you are married to them; it's not meant to change "on the fly".

Certainly an easier mid gig change, just whip the sponge out. I think JPJ would do the very same when it came round to playing Heartbreaker.
