bass-spotting - "Montreux's Theme"

This is one often forgotten Yes instrumental... it seems to me that the playing is so inspired by each member of the band, more evident on the gracious interplay between Steve and Chris.
Which could be the bass here? I would like to hear your guesses before I try my own guess. Of course if someone knows for sure it's even better :)

Thanks Woody. Now that you said that - It might be the RM alright... It seems to have a certain compression. Sometimes I thought that it could be the short scaled Gibson Triumph (Turn of the Century)... Maybe it's that compression that fooling my ears.

Sounds RM to me but a Jazz would sound like that too and if it was wired for stereo you loose that humbucking dual sound of the Jazz.

Mostly,it sounds like Chris!
And it has been a long time, but the one time i saw Chris use the "hobbit" in concert,it did not have that RIC distinctiveness, seemed to be a darker sort of tone.
(I think that's what they call LP recording basses?) mebbe not... 8)

Yes I think so - Except the triple neck, which wasn't used in Montreux, as far as I know. The brown bass is the Gibson Triumph (short scale).

That's a great photo!

Sounds like the RM to me, although some parts sound a little "fretless" to my ears.

In order to evaluate this track, had to dig out disc three of my box set. Reminded me of another outtake track from this period, "Money" in which Yes play to a satirical political broadcast by Rick Wakeman. Not sure whose idea this was, but about halfway through the track, the arrangement drops out and all you can hear for about seven seconds is Rick's voice and the rhythm section. Man, that short section is about the best Ric tone I can think of, offhand.

Totally agree with that Jim. A perfect example of how many times a great bass tone is there, yet sunk in the mix when the "lead" instruments come in - luckily we have that "screw anything you can" part :)

I think it's the Jazz, also.

I'm glad for the resurrection because it made go back and try to learn the whole song. One of Chris' most graceful! Still can't make up my mind about this...

The video, unfortunately for us late-comers, has been pulled.
