No Strap Button?

Has anybody else ever seen a hollowbody Rickenbacker without a strap button from the factory?

Take a look at this example from '65 - it has no strap button or threaded hole in the upper horn. Instead there is a stap button screwed to the neck heel, but I don't know if it's factory or not. Very strange!

The more old ricks I see, the less that surprises me concerning the factory in the old days. Let's say standard practice was a bit challenged at times.  But that's part of the attraction to these old beauties. :)

Either there was a stap button hole that was filled a long time ago on the end of the bass horn (nice job) or it could have been special ordered with the button on the heel.

This is a 1965 RM export, no? RM could have done the mod.

Is the strap button on the heel a vintage Rick part?

...this looks like the guitar that sold recently on eBay (early Xmas pressie to yourself Collin? )

Assuming this is the same guitar, from the other listing pics it looked bang on to me, but when I was looking at it I assumed that there would be a strap bolt hole on the upper bout as usual and someone had simply removed the bolt there and retrofitted a strap button on the heel. As I can't see any sign of a repair on the pic you posted, presumably it left the factory without the usual strap bolt on the bout....maybe as a special order. The fact that the case doesn't have the export Rickenbacker badge suggested to me it was a US domestic special order f-hole rather than a Rose Morris export...so maybe at the same time as placing the special order for the f, the customer requested the different strap bolt location. Are there any additional tail holes to suggest it originally had an R rather than Accent?

Anyhow, whatever it is, it is a beautiful looking guitar - nice score Collin! 8)

Indeed, the same one -- thanks Ed! Somehow I had missed the thread on it. :)

I'll take a pic of the strap button, it is a non-standard Ric part, held on with a Phillips screw. Under it, the finish is darker, indicating it has been on there since it was new (or close thereabouts). It most certainly never had one on the horn, filled-in etc, it's perfectly clean.

It originally had an accent vibrato. I believe it to be a 335S domestic model. Interestingly, the next serial number up in the registry is an almost identical 335S, but with the silver knobs and it has a strap button.

All right! Two pickups, I KNEW you'd cave!! :D

Nice score, Col. How does it play? Now all you need's a 1996 for your RoMo guitar collection and you're all set!

What's that sound?? Oh it's my router turning on to make room for the proper number of toasters. :)

Well I'm halfway to the RM set. Just need to find a 1996, and a 1995 too but I'm not counting that one for whatever reason. Would like a 1999 as well, but I'm not holding my breath...

Mark - thanks! :P

I do enjoy that tailpiece on the other 335, though.

Not a huge fan of the trap on ES-335s, but it does work nicely on the ES-330.

ES-335 TDC....my favorite (six string) guitar of all time! :)
