Long time idea

Post by berth »

Some years ago I bought a 4003 MID/BT/BH/FL. It was meant to be the fretless sister of my 4003 MID/BT/BH, but it turned out to be nog such a good buy. The color was totally different to my fretted 4003 MID/BT/BH so the identical sister idea was gone, besides this the bass also had several issues of which lacquer cracking was one.

I also like non-lacquered wooden (non-)fretboards on fretless basses. So yesterday I finally took the bass to Gun Customs who is a fine luthier. He is going to put an ebony board on the bass. If I am happy with the result a refin will follow. I am thinking of the Fiat color Tech House Grey, which is a somewhat blueish gray. I think it would look fine with the black hardware and binding and the Ebony non-fretboard.

Since you have black binding and an ebony board, I'd go with a 'Walnut' (glossy Autumnglo) refin for that 4002 vibe... Check out this one:

The only WAL I like is my 4005 WAL. ;-) But that is because of al the Mojo.... In general I dislike Brown-ish and Yellow-ish colors much.

Fingerboard.

Given the BT/BH and an ebony fingerboard I think a non-yellowing white would look smashing (no props to Mr. Townshend!) on this bass.

This is gonna be cool! I'm interested to see how it comes out! The Black ebony would really go with the hardware.

Bert, stick to the Tech House Grey - it will be a most unusal item! Somehow that grey colour always reminds me of german WWII grey but in the gloss version

It's been a decade since I gave up my MS Flight Simulator hobby but this reference is one I'll never forget from creating aircraft textures!

Bert, which of the colours do you mean as I see three different VWs!
