This is my May 72 bass... originally FG. It was a local find of Kevin's, and used for parts by Tony on his "Diamond in the Rough" 71. I bought the husk from Tony knowing that it would make a killer MG... after putting two coats of clear on I knew I was right!
Before stripping it I strung it up, with just a bridge and tuners (Rotos of course), to check the setup and action. It plays REALLY well, and sounds amazing acoustically. It's also very light, which I prefer.
I have everything I need to put this back together PROPERLY...
Sand-cast aluminium bridge/tailpiece
Grover "wavy" Slimlines (drilled and tapped... thanks Paul for the info on doing this)
Correct plexi TRC (Thanks Jeff!)
Correct screw-top treble pickup w/aluminium baseplate (off one of my old JAN '73 basses)
Correct low-profile treble pickup cover
Pickguard cut from tracing of the original (Thanks Tony... good thinking!)
Recent reissue toaster
All the other odds and ends are also pretty much period correct...
May was a real transition month for the 4001 in 1972. A look at the register (GREAT resource!) reveals the changes... for instance Sean's (Seans) JG has walnut wings, no shedua stringer, Grover "flat" Slimlines and has a serial number a bit higher than this bass.
I'll post more on the details as I continue the restoration.

Hey Kevin. Yep the MG looks great... never of a fan of FG, and while the finish was in decent shape I had to repair the holes from the non-stock bridge anyway.

Wow is right! While i love fireglo,maplego with those features and that fancy figuring is just stunning. Congrats,looking forward to seeing the re-integrated pics!

The neck is also bird's-eye... but since the neck is quartersawn it appears as flame.

That is a great looking bass. You see so few of this kind. The '60's instruments are usually the best here. A few from '78, a couple from '84, but generally speaking they are few and far between.
Should look seriously impressive in it's finished state.
