What year is this bass? Judging form the surround, I'd say a '63.

What do you think?

I say '63, too. Nice and prominent, too, for a change. 8)

That may be the worst bass tone I have ever heard.

Sounds like a Dano VI or a Bass VI...

I think I detected some sparkley in the inlays, so probably '64 or later. That would be my guess. No way of telling if that bass was used in the recording. Back in those days, weren't they all using a Longhorn for that "click bass" effect?

Yes, could be. At first I thought they looked like the dull inlays of '63.

I googled it & found that the bass used in the recording was a 6 string Dano bass. Although, you can get a similar sound with the HS cranked with treble all the way up.

It's almost a "fuzz click" bass! :D

Hmm. However, I see that Sugar Shack was a No. 1 hit in the fall of 1963, so the bass can't be a '64 (assuming the "video" was done while the record was still hot). So perhaps I should amend my statement in the book about the crushed pearl inlays coming along in 1964. :?

I think that video was shot a few years after the song became a hit (in '63), based on the band's wardrobe and the fact that it's a color clip.

There's heavy reverb on the bass too.

"Jimmy and his band reprise their big hit from 1963 in the late sixties."
