1972 4001 Mapleglo - Jo Burt

I picked up this bass from Jo Burt as a consignment sale just before Christmas. Jo played with Sector 27 and Tom Robinson, before session/tour work with Elton John, Freddie Mercury, Bryan Adams and even touring with Black Sabbath on their 1987 USA tour - I've only seen him with a black P bass with Sabbath, but have footage of him at Wembley Stadium with this bass.

The pickguard damage came from a bottle thrown at Reading festival, which also knocked out the bridge pickup - hence the Seymour Duncan replacement and the reverse mounted plate.

It's a superb playing bass and I plan to clean it up a little and take it back to stock - keeping the exchanged bits of course.

The pickguard repair is rubbery latex and makes a useful grip-spot for the thumb!

Very interesting tuning keys on it, late '50s/early '60s?

I'm clueless Jeff - there are holes for slimline grovers underneath.

It's all lovely and mellow John. Surprisingly good condition for a gigging bass too.

That's some beautifully ambered maple there! My 4000 had those same (reverse action?) tuners on it.(also coincidently installed over old Grover slimline tuner holes). They have been replaced with modern hipshot tuners that turn the right way.
Famtastic bass!!

Anyone have any other pics of Jo Burt with this Rickenbacker, maybe playing with Sabbath in 1987??? It would be cool to see it.

Yeah, I thought so too. Not the usual bare wood hole in the CV.

Wow, really cool bass! I'd keep it just the way it is. :D
