Rocking out... With a Violin???

Well, OK, it's not just any violin, it's Mark Wood and his self-designed Viper Electric Violin.

How about some Twisted Sister? The first 2:50 are the Viper solo, it gets really interesting at about 1:47, more like electric guitar than violin.

Heavy Metal Violin?

Vivaldi anyone?

They are fretted, come with up to 7 strings for a 7 octave range from bass to violin, and strap on so you don't get neck cramps holding them. Pretty cool...

Wood's violin is nice and modern, but most of it is effects - still, he has to know how to use all the effects to create the soundscapes. I prefer the prewar sounds of the video Mr Hall posted though - am I the only one who thinks some south german and austrian folk music reminds of hawaiian music? Probably just me again

True. The thing I liked was the additional strings to cover a wider range (what do you expect, I'm a bass player  ) and the frets (though the fretless version would probably be cool too). I can't say I've really ever heard bowed instruments run through guitar type effects though, interesting differences from a standard guitar...

Thanks for posting the Deke Dickerson video John! I was fortune enough to catch the All-Bakelite Band back in '09 and it was absolutely amazing! :D

I have seen things of better taste than that violated violin.

Those bakelite Rickenbackers are time machines.
For a moment I thought I was back in '33.
Then I realised I was born in '72
