Would a 4001 lend itself to becoming a hollow body?

Hell yeah, that'd be awesome!

Hollow body 4001

Post by basshead »

Anyone ever thought of doing a hollow body 4001? Admittedly, I'd had a couple of drinks when this brainstorm hit me, but I reckon it could be done. If I was to route say, 1/4" off the top of the body, only to the left of the neck join line, then basically hollow it all out. Put a 1/4" maple cap back on, redo the binding.

Thoughts?
Something like this. It was a quick Photoshop, but you get the idea...

You could also holow it out from the back, that'd save you a lot of trouble, and you could keep the thickness of the bass and add 1/4"
Don't know about the soundhole though.
It could use some redesigning, or it could be the habit of seeing it on 330 and 360 shaped guitars.

I suppose you could do it from the back. I thought it would be easier drawing up the hollow area, with reference to the cavities already in the body. Plus, the old wreck I'm doing now will be totally re-bound.

It'd be even less "hollow-body" than a thinline Telecaster..... which isn't very hollowbody at all.

Plus it's a neck-through! It physically wouldn't work as a hollowbody.

Lol, valid points...

How about "partial hollow body, 4001/5"?

Just remove the body wing, hollow it out while it's separate, and then drill some large, strategically placed holes through the neck section into the control cavity. Sort of a tuned port arrangement...

I have NO idea what to do with those skinny stringed things... I'm just a bass player...

I think I prefer the 4001 pickguard...

I wouldn't think so. Aren't the bodies the same shape, except for basically the binding?

Wim, hollowing out a 4001/3 style has possibilities, but for me the slash soundhole and the shape of the body (lines and curves) just don't fit for me aesthetically.

Agreed. Those two shapes simply don't go well together.

I'll have a mess with Photoshop later and see what I can come up with.
