I put linseed oil on the fretboard of my Rick Acoustic (which is unvarnished) and I got pulled away so I did not wipe off the excess... When I finally got back to the guitar to finish it, there is now a tacky "shellac" for want of a better term on the fretboard. How do I get this off?
I was thinking mineral spirits or some kind of thinner but I'd probably dry the wood out terribly and melt the position markers... Then I was thinking of loading it up with more linseed oil to see if it would turn itself back into solution but I don't want to make the problem worse.
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance,
JKC

Re: Rick Acoustic Help
Both of you are on parallel but correct tracks.
Mineral spirits will not hurt the markers. Naphtha will do a nice job, too, of removing the stickiness. A fresh application of linseed oil will dissolve the old stuff too.
I don't use linseed oil for this exact reason. But I do use Lem-Oil, which will remove the stickiness and "feed" the wood (for lack of a better term).
