Ric-o-sound variations

Slightly off topic I suppose, but I'm going to be experimenting with Ric-o-sound, with my 4003 basses. Both are wired identically with push/pull coil-tappable HB1s in the bridge, and regular Hi-gains in the neck.
I have two Ashdown MAG300 amps, and both have effects send/return sockets. One amp I'll drive clean, but the other, I will use for effects - mostly a bit of overdrive.
What's the general feeling with regard to using effects? I could put the Ashdown Bass Drive pedal in line, before connection to the main input, or use the effects send/return sockets instead. The obvious difference, is the send/return are post EQ on the amp.
anybody any advice/experience?
