Date this 4001 Bass?

The current owner has said that he thinks this is a '67. He thinks he has the plate and also a bag of parts "somewhere" - we are looking for them! It is quite a project with all the extra routing to fill and a couple of other issues etc. I wasn't sure that it looked like a '67 due to the shortish headstock. It has Grover slimline screw holes and is actually quite a solid carcass and straight neck. Any expert advice gratefully accepted? Cheers.

Very cool! Looks like the extra routing is under the pick guard.

"Mostly" Ted! Or definitely if it had this pickguard combo...

I think the shorter, more square headstock started in 1971 and was continued during the shedua-strip neck-through era that started in spring '72. So my guess is 1971.

Thanks Paul. Looking at the examples in the register makes me think late '69 at the earliest and more likely to be '70 or '71. The headstock crest is nice and sharp though, not like some of the more rounded, bulbous examples of '70/'71. Hopefully the parts will turn up and provide the proof soon.

Holy SH*T! Look at that routing! Was that where he built his 2-car garage? Wow... I'm glad you're taking this on, the poor abused soul.

I'd say '71-early '72 as well.

I think it's '69 or '70 due to no white plastic crown on bottom of neck, my '71 has one

That was classic...maybe that is where he kept his "stash"

HA HA! "You could put your weed in there!" He could probably set up an entire underground hydroponic growing system in there.

That's what I was looking for, but couldn't tell for sure if it had it or not.

My old Jan '71 21 fretter didn't have the end binding, but my Feb and March '71's did.

'69 or '70 would be my guess too, if no binding.

Great info and beautiful examples, many thanks.

Well it looks like it's later than '69-'70 because it has a slither of binding at the end of the fretboard - as seen in this pic. Does anyone have a shot of the original routing for one of these? Although deep, the "floor" looks original - any guidance would be great.

Also does the long (biscuit?) jointing between body pieces look normal? Thanks for your help all :D
