Rickenbacker String Question (old vs. new)

So I swapped out my Rickenbacker 6-string strings with a new set from Rickenbacker and they sound totally different. I had an older set lying around (wound third) and put that on and it had the sound I was looking for. What's the deal with the new strings? Even the unwound strings sound brighter. The older strings have that perfect sound for me. Where can you get the older strings these days (preferably with a wound 3rd)?

I believe Pick of the Ricks carries the old "compressed roundwound" strings, if that's your cup of tea. Rickenbacker no longer makes them.

Yes, I bought them from POTR (both the POTR brand and Curt Mangan), but they don't sound the same as the old ones.
