Multi Rick owners, which is the last bass you would let go?

And you are not allowed to say "none"!

Personally, it is my 1972 4001S. The narrow neck feels absolutely great and its sound is very unique. Play with the neck pickup only and it sounds like a vintage P-bass. Play with the bridge pup and you get the Rickenbacker grind.

Interesting choice,Jeff. My very first Ric bass was probably that vintage,as it was a neck through 4000 that was "a couple years old" when i briefly owned it around 1974,and i would love to have it or one like it back again.
As to my 3 currently owned ones,my custom '04 Laredo 4002v57 is hands down the last one i would sell, although my '74 4000 and my '04 Cheyenne II are also keepers. The Laredo's unique combination of electronics, pickup positions, and styling make it my Ne Plus Ultra RIC.
Edit. Ed and i posted simultaneously the same year/model!
Ed -my bass looked exactly like yours before the conversion.

My white 4001 v63. Every time I play it, I'm transported back in time to my now distant youth in the early 70's, listening to Chris Squire, Lee Jackson, Jon Camp and later Geddy Lee and Bruce Foxton. That "thrummm" you get down the bottom end, with the strident cut of the top end of with one of these basses cannot be beaten, IMHO (although it was a close call between the v63 and my '86 4001 FL).

My response would only change, I'd imagine, if I were ever lucky enough to have the opportunity to purchase a 4002 - my holy grail of Ricks.

Tough call since the are all unique in their own way. Hmm, I'd be torn but I'd most likely keep my 4002 until the very end.

I don't play it that much, but my custom "4008CS" would be hard to let go.

I'd probably keep my 4003. It's hard to beat for versatility, and the action and tone are both incredible on it.

I love my 4001C64 too, but it just doesn't demand to be played like my 4003 does.

My 2010 Geddy Lee Jazz Bass. Then, maybe, the 75 Rick.

That's not the first time you've so coyly tied to pry this bass from my hands Peter. If I ever decide to sell it, I'll let you know first. I don't have a recent pic of it, but since this pic was taken in 2006, I've added a current RIHS pickup with a newly cut and plated 60's lap steel surround, wired it myself in the standard 4-contol style, and added an actual Chris Squire guard to it. The signature on this guard was obtained from the master himself at the RIC 75th Anniversary event at the House of Blues in Hollywood. Chris said the bass was "quite nice".
