JG/MG - 4001 - Finish?

I've got the chance of a late 4001 - an '81- good price, but concerned it may be a refin.

It's Jetglo - but may have been a MG as in some places (been told, not seen it), it's worn right down (only a couple of places on the fretboard).

Question is, does a worn JG always wear to a MG-type look? I was hoping that it was just wear, rather than a refin. I'm aware that a natural wood look may be perceived as a MG underneath?

Obviously a refin would affect the price - and a late 4001 is not the most desirable?

If you're asking if a Jetglo 4001 would have maple underneath the paint, the answer is yes.

I can tell you YES...by my personal experience.

I have a 4001 that WAS Jetglo when I purchased it. I had wanted a MapleGlo, but, needing a lefty I took what I could get.
I later had it refinished to MG. After this was done, it looked SO good that we wondered WHY such a nice piece of wood was painted over. ( BTW--I am the original/current owner, bought from a music store)

So...YES....a JetGlo bass will be MG or natural wood under the finish.

Yep, they're all made from maple. They try to reserve the nicest pieces of maple for transparent finishes (such as clear/Mapleglo), but I've heard that when they have a ton of orders for solid colors (such as Jetglo), sometimes some magnificent maple gets painted over just to fill the orders...

Iain, a JG will have the maple sealed with clear coat, then the black will be sprayed on, then the over clear coat is sprayed. So any wear of the black paint will reveal maple, not any kind of primer color. A clear coating sealer IS the primer.
